The Jianghu 4-class frigate (Type 053H1Q) was a test ship of the and was therefore the only ship of this type.

The Type 053H1Q was developed to carrier new equipment introduced from Western countries on actual ships and conduct operational tests.

After undergoing operational testing, this equipment was put into service on the Jiangwei 1-class frigates (Type 053H2G) and on the Jiangwei 2-class frigates (Type 053H3).

Because of its excellent anti-submarine combat capabilities, after operational trials were completed, this type served as the Chinese Navy's most capable anti-submarine frigate.
