Фрегат IRIS Damavand (77)

IRIS Damavand (77), also recognized as Jamaran-2 and Velayat, served as the second ship within the Iranian Moudge-class frigates and acted as the flagship for the northern fleet. This class appeared to evolve from the Alvand class and was named Damavand upon its inauguration in the Caspian Sea. The ship sank on January 28, 2018, following a collision with the breakwater at Bandar-e Anzali on January 10.

On February 23, 2010, Iranian media reported the commencement of the ship's production. The vessel possessed the capacity to transport helicopters, anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes, modern guns, and air defense guns. Additionally, electronic warfare devices were part of its equipment.

The warship featured a novel flat-type, phased array radar, which underwent testing in 2011. The development of this radar took longer than anticipated, causing a delay in the vessel's launch until March 2013. The fire control radar was also replaced by a contemporary radar dome. New sensors, e-warfare devices, and radars were installed, augmenting its capabilities. The frigate integrated a central attack and warfare management command control system, allowing it to simultaneously track 100 surface, sub-surface, and air targets and select the best for engagement.

Damavand, formerly known as Velayat, was launched in March 2013 in the Caspian Sea near the northern port city of Bandar-Anzali. It underwent engine testing and performed a SAT test in the Caspian Sea from July 16 to 17, 2014, officially joining the Navy on March 9, 2015.

On January 10, 2018, Damavand was stationed at Bandar-Anzali in the Caspian Sea. The incident is likely a result of a navigational error, influenced by a severe storm in the area that led to high waves and low visibility. During the incident, six crew members fell overboard, with four rescued and two considered missing by media sources. The Iranian Navy did not confirm these reports, and little information has been released regarding the cause of the grounding, aside from references to wave height and visibility issues during the storm.

A video circulated in Iranian media displayed Damavand fully submerged in the Caspian Sea a few weeks after sustaining damages in stormy weather at Anzali Port. This might lead to the ship's removal from the active commission list of Moudge-class frigates. However, satellite images revealed the hull of a similar ship being constructed at the Caspian Sea port of Bandar-e Anzali.
