The USS Thorn (DD-988), a destroyer from the Spruance class, was the second vessel in the United States Navy to honor Lieutenant Jonathan Thorn (1779–1811), known for his involvement in Decatur's expedition to eliminate the captured frigate Philadelphia in 1804.

Construction of the Thorn began on 29 August 1977 at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss.; she was launched on 22 November 1978 (with the christening done by Mrs. Patricia Ansley on 3 February 1979) and commissioned on 16 February 1980.

However, Thorn was decommissioned and removed from the Navy roster on 25 August 2004. Later, on 22 July 2006, Thorn was deliberately sunk off the East Coast of the United States for testing purposes/target practice. Her wreck now lies submerged at a depth of 12,792 feet (3,899 m) at coordinates 32°59′04″N 75°06′54″W.
