Project Overview and Construction

The NRP Dom João II (A5209) is an advanced multi-purpose naval support vessel developed for the Portuguese Navy. The ship was ordered in 2023 from the Dutch shipbuilding company Damen Group, with construction carried out at the Damen shipyard in Galați, Romania.

The keel laying and first steel cutting ceremony took place on October 3, 2024. The vessel was successfully launched on April 7, 2026, with delivery scheduled for later in 2026.

During construction, the shipbuilders relied heavily on proven, standardized engineering solutions. This approach significantly reduced production time, minimized technical risks, and optimized overall project costs.

Design and Technical Specifications

The NRP Dom João II has an overall length of 107 meters and a displacement of approximately 7,000 tons, making it a mid-sized but highly capable naval platform.

One of its key features is a large flight deck measuring 94 meters in length and 11 meters in width. This deck is designed to support helicopter operations as well as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), enhancing the ship’s operational flexibility.

The vessel is powered by a hybrid diesel propulsion system consisting of:

• 2 * MAN 12V175D-MEM diesel engines (2,414 hp each)
• 2 * MAN 16V175D-MEM diesel engines (3,218 hp each)

These engines drive two fixed-pitch propellers (EcoPeller SRE 560), ensuring efficient propulsion and fuel economy. Additionally, a bow thruster system (TransverseThruster STT 3 FP) improves maneuverability in confined waters.

The ship is expected to have an operational endurance of up to 45 days without resupply.

Operational Capabilities and Mission Profile

The NRP Dom João II is designed as a multi-role support ship capable of performing a wide range of naval and civilian missions.

Its primary roles include:

• Oceanographic and scientific research
• Maritime security and surveillance
• Search and rescue (SAR) operations
• Disaster response and humanitarian assistance

Conceptually, the vessel functions as a mothership for unmanned systems, capable of deploying and supporting aerial, surface, and underwater drones.

The aft section of the ship features a ramp for launching unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), significantly expanding its operational capabilities.

Modular Payload and Onboard Infrastructure

The ship is equipped with a 650-square-meter cargo deck capable of accommodating up to twelve standard 20-foot containers. These modular units can be configured for specialized missions, including:

• NATO Role 2 field hospital
• Hyperbaric chamber systems
• Scientific laboratories

The vessel also includes dedicated laboratory spaces and living quarters for scientific personnel, making it suitable for extended research expeditions.

A hangar and aviation facilities allow for the operation and maintenance of helicopters and drones, further enhancing mission versatility.

Capacity and Deployment Flexibility

The NRP Dom João II offers significant transport and deployment capabilities. It can accommodate:

• Up to 18 armored vehicles
• Up to 18 boats or mission modules
• Up to 300 personnel

Additionally, the vessel can carry and deploy up to four landing craft, supporting amphibious and logistics operations.

Strategic Role and Future Use

In peacetime, the ship will primarily be used for environmental monitoring, scientific research, and humanitarian missions. However, its modular design and advanced systems allow it to be rapidly adapted for military support roles when required.

By combining flexibility, modern naval technology, and multi-domain operational capability, the NRP Dom João II represents a new generation of naval support vessels designed for hybrid missions in both military and civilian contexts.
