The round-the-world regatta Volvo Ocean Race is both a world sport competition and an incredible adventure. While solemn events take place on the beach, dramas are played out on the sea, requiring extraordinary endurance from the person.

Sailing regatta Volvo Ocean Race first started in 1973 in the UK under the name Whitbread Round the World Race. Since 1997, the regatta carries its current name and is held every four years (since 2005 — every 3 years), is one of the five largest sports events in the world and is one of the most spectacular and exciting competitions on the planet. Regatta Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006 was the most successful round-the-world race at the moment and won for this event the reputation of one of the most prestigious sports competitions. When organizing competitions in 2008-2009. 33 years of experience were used, which allowed creating all conditions for the formation of the most professional racing team in the world. For the first time in the history of the event, participants will be on a new route, they will visit new ports in India and Asia.

The start of the regatta began on October 11, 2008 in the Spanish city of Alicante. Athletes will travel through Cape Town (South Africa) to India and Southeast Asia, then stop in China before they start the longest stage in South America. The next stop is scheduled in Boston, on the east coast of the United States. After resting, the participants will head to Galway (the western coast of Ireland) and, finally, finish in St. Petersburg.
