CHL Progressor and CHL Innovator are the most unique ships in the world
A ship captain I know, by the way, whom I interviewed, told me there's a very rare type of vessel in the world that few people know about. I promised to write about it.
The CHL Progressor and CHL Innovator are two exceptional seagoing vessels belonging to the extremely rare BIBO (Bulk-in-Bags-out) class. Literally translated, this concept means «load bulk cargo and unload in bags.» Essentially, these are floating bulk-packaging plants integrated directly into the hull of the vessel. Essentially, these are floating industrial complexes capable of not only transporting bulk cargo but also performing complete packaging directly on board.
Unique BIBO vessel CHL Innovator
There are only two vessels of this type in the global merchant fleet, making the CHL Progressor and CHL Innovator unique not only from a technical but also a logistical perspective.
The BIBO Concept: A New Level of Logistics
Traditional bulk carriers deliver bulk cargo (cement, fertilizers, minerals, raw sugar) to ports, where permanent infrastructure—such as silos, packing plants, and warehouse facilities—is required for further use. BIBO-type vessels radically change this model. They:
- accept bulk cargo;
- package it directly on board;
- unload finished containerized products suitable for immediate use or subsequent transportation.
Thus, these vessels combine the functions of a bulk carrier, packing plant, transshipment terminal, and logistics center.
The traditional model of bulk cargo transportation involves delivering raw materials to a port, followed by transshipment and packing at onshore facilities.
This approach is particularly effective in regions with limited port infrastructure where permanent packing facilities or silos are not available.

General characteristics of BIBO-type vessels
CHL Progressor and CHL Innovator are designed as specialized multipurpose vessels optimized for long voyages and intensive cargo operations. Their operation is focused on routes where:
- fixed packing facilities or ports with minimal technical equipment are absent;
- there is a demand for bagged product;
- speed of turnkey delivery is important.
The vessels are capable of operating autonomously, without the need for onshore packing facilities or port cranes.
Hull design
Externally, the CHL Progressor and CHL Innovator resemble classic bulk carriers with deck cranes, but their internal layout is fundamentally different.
Distinguishing features:
- several cargo holds for bulk materials;
- reinforced decks and bulkheads for accommodating industrial equipment;
- optimized internal cargo handling scheme;
- Increased stability requirements during cargo handling.
The hull is designed for continuous operation of the packaging systems without compromising seaworthiness.

Floating Bagging Plant
The key element of BIBO-type vessels is the integrated packaging complex, which converts bulk cargo into finished packaged goods. It includes:
- cargo picking systems from holds;
- conveyor and elevator lines;
- dosing equipment;
- automated bag filling machines;
- sealing or sealing systems;
- internal conveyor belts for delivering finished goods to the unloading area.

Packaging is carried out in accordance with specified weight standards, allowing for direct use of the products in construction, agriculture, and industry.
Cargo Operations and Autonomy
Both vessels are equipped with their own deck cranes, ensuring complete independence from port infrastructure. This allows:
- operation in ports without shore-based lifting mechanisms;
- direct unloading onto a berth or transport;
- servicing temporary and small-scale ports.
This autonomy significantly expands the vessels' operational geography.
Cargo Types
CHL Progressor and CHL Innovator are designed for the transportation and packaging of a wide range of bulk materials, including:
- cement;
- mineral fertilizers;
- raw sugar;
- chemical powders;
- mineral and industrial bulk materials.
This makes the vessels versatile platforms for the agricultural, construction, and chemical industries. In addition, BIBO-type vessels offer a number of strategic advantages:
- shortening the logistics chain;
- Reduced number of cargo transhipments;
- Reduced capital expenditures on onshore infrastructure;
- Accelerated product introduction;
- Increased supply flexibility.
In essence, the customer receives the finished packaged product immediately upon the vessel's arrival at port.
CHL Progressor rare type ship
The existence of two BIBO-type vessels in the world makes the CHL Progressor and CHL Innovator true engineering exceptions. They exemplify how innovative shipbuilding solutions can transform traditional approaches to maritime transportation.
Although these vessels are little known to the general public, their role in specialized logistics is extremely important. They demonstrate that maritime transport can be not only a means of delivery but also an active participant in the industrial process.
