In 1995, on the shores of the Williston Reservoir, construction was completed on a 110-meter-long vessel powered by 7,400 horsepower. The project was developed by Polar Design Associates of Vancouver, a company renowned for its expertise in designing ships for cold environments.

By November of the same year, the timber carrier entered service and immediately secured its place in maritime history: at the time of its launch, it was the largest timber carrying ship in the world.

Technical Characteristics of the Vessel

The Williston Transporter can break through 1.5 meters of solid ice, crossing the lake to deliver cargo equivalent to 91 logging trucks over a distance of 65 km. In winter, this journey takes around six hours; in summer, approximately four. The ship can transport up to 5,000 tons of timber, making it an essential lifeline for the region’s forestry and mining industries.

Its impressive width of 33 meters provides exceptional stability on icy waters, while its four powerful engines, each connected to azimuth thrusters or nozzle-equipped propeller units, grant the vessel extraordinary maneuverability and reliability in extreme conditions.
