Jet boat the MISS GEICO the fastest ship on the planet
The fastest and most spectacular water show is the jet boat races held annually in Sarasota, Florida. But these are not just motorboats, they are the most extreme watercraft. They are fast and powerful. And it is an incredibly dangerous sport.
You don't often see top speeds on the water. The stakes are high in racing. Motorboats glide at speeds of 300 km/h. At such speeds, accidents lead to destruction and casualties, but that doesn't stop people from testing the strength of themselves and their watercraft.
One of the fastest jet boats is a vessel called “MISS GEICO.” It is an “extreme” class sports boat. It looks more like an airplane than a boat. It is an ocean-going vessel consisting of two aerodynamic hulls connected to each other. Above is an insulated cabin that protects the crew. The propellers located at the stern of each hull rotate at about 24,000 rpm and provide jet propulsion to the speedboat.

During the construction of the boat, two turbojet engines were installed as an experiment. The result was shocking—the racing boat easily accelerated to an incredible speed. The acceleration was twice as fast as free fall acceleration.
The cost of the speedboat is estimated at $1.5 million. The turbine works as follows. The rotating compressor blades suck in air and compress it to 240 times its normal state. Injectors inject fuel, and spark plugs ignite the mixture. The exhaust gases rush backward, causing the turbine to rotate, which in turn drives the compressor.
The turbine generates a huge amount of energy using very few parts. They all rotate in the same direction around a single shaft. The turbo engines of the MISS GEICO motorboat are durable and have been thoroughly tested. The design is simple, effective, and elegant, but not everyone can afford it. One turbine costs US$250,000.
Although the turbine produces the highest torque, its main enemy is salt water. It doesn't take much to stop the engine. Salt crystallizes on the blades, causing the engine to stall and eventually catch fire. Repairing boats with these types of motors is very expensive, but the end justifies the means.

Operating a jet boat at such speeds requires certain skills and abilities from the crew. The captain's task is to ensure that the boat glides across the surface of the water. It is important not to keep most of the hull underwater, as this will increase drag and cause a loss of speed. This process is called air cushioning. As the boat picks up speed, the air forced into the inter-hull tunnel pushes the vessel out of the water. In rough seas, a jet boat can travel the length of a football field, flying from one wave crest to another.
The pilot keeps the boat in a horizontal position by adjusting the angle of the hull and the angle of the propellers under water. If the airflow catches the boat at a speed of 80 knots, it can lead to disaster. Pilots of such boats wear helmet masks with oxygen supply, like pilots.

The American city of Sarasota hosts an annual jet boat festival, where designers and teams showcase their masterpieces. They are greeted like stars, as the spectacle is exciting and long-awaited. For the participants, this is the world's largest boat race, and just taking part is an achievement in itself. The secret to winning is finding your opponent's weak spot.
Each team has observers who monitor the navigational situation in the race area. They follow the boat in a helicopter and report on the situation. The observers are the “eyes” of the Miss Geico jet boat. There are also two rescuers on board the helicopter in case of an emergency.
Thousands of spectators gather on the coast to enjoy the sounds of power and speed. The class of sea boats is not limited in terms of volume and engine type. The race covers a distance of 10 km, which has a dangerous section: a 45-degree turn. Ten “laps” must be completed. On the eve of the races, each motorboat is given a four-hour trial run.

During competitions, engine malfunctions often occur due to overheating and seawater. Sometimes, in order to win, it is necessary to go beyond the limits of human and machine capabilities.
High technology, pure speed, and elegant appearance make the MISS GEICO jet boat undoubtedly the fastest vessel on the planet.
